Khalid Mish’al has been the head of the Political Bureau of Hamas since 1996. He was born in Ramallah in 1956, and displaced from 1967 to Kuwait, where he remained until 1990. Mish’al became involved in Palestinian and Islamic activism in his university in Kuwait, where he headed an Islamic Student Organization. He joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 1971. In 1997, Mish’al was the target of an attempted Israeli assassination in Jordan. He was expelled from Jordan to Qatar in 1999, and eventually moved to Damascus. After the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin by the IDF, Mish’al was appointed the leader of Hamas.
